Prince Harry’s complicated feelings toward Queen Camilla were made painfully clear when he revealed a harsh nickname for his stepmother in his tell-all memoir Spare.
The Duke of Sussex referred to Camilla, now 77, as the "Other Woman", a title that highlighted the deep emotional rift her relationship with King Charles caused during Harry and Prince William’s childhood.
In Spare, ghostwritten by J.R. Moehringer and published in January 2023, Harry candidly detailed how Camilla’s presence in their father’s life "confused" and "tormented" both brothers for years.
While Harry and William accepted that King Charles was in love with Camilla, they reportedly opposed the idea of their father marrying her.
"Despite Willy and me urging him not to, Pa was going ahead," Harry wrote.
"We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings. We recognised that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved."
Harry’s painful recollections also revisit the late Princess Diana’s infamous BBC Panorama interview, where she said, "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."
Harry reflected that his mother’s statement didn’t fully capture the collateral damage: "She left Willy and me out of the equation," he wrote.
"We didn’t understand what was going on with her and Pa, certainly, but we intuited enough — we sensed the presence of the Other Woman, because we suffered the downstream effects."
King Charles and Camilla's relationship timeline
Camilla and Charles’s relationship became public in 1999, about a year and a half after Princess Diana’s tragic death.
Harry was just 14, and William was 17 at the time.
Charles and Camilla eventually married in 2005. Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall and, following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing in 2022, she was officially named Queen Consort alongside King Charles III’s ascension to the throne.
