Princess Diana’s longtime hairdresser has set the record straight on one of the most persistent rumours about Prince Harry.
Richard Dalton, who styled the late Princess of Wales’ hair from 1981 to 1990, revealed how tabloid speculation about Harry’s parentage deeply upset Diana.
For years, rumours swirled that Major James Hewitt, with whom Diana had a well-documented affair, was Harry’s biological father, largely because both men shared red hair.
Speaking to People, Dalton dismissed the claims as cruel gossip, pointing out that red hair runs strongly in the Spencer family.
“Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, his hair was bright red. Lady Sarah, her oldest sister, also red. The Spencers definitely had red hair,” he explained.
“But at the time, I couldn’t exactly shout that from the rooftops.”
Prince Harry himself revisited the rumour in his memoir Spare, where he revealed King Charles would even make jokes about it.
“Pa liked telling stories,” Harry wrote, recalling Charles saying: “Who knows if I’m even your real father?” -- a comment Harry described as “remarkably unfunny.”
Harry also clarified that Diana hadn’t even met Hewitt until after his birth, proving the rumour false.
