Queen Elizabeth II was known for her iconic fashion, but one surprising wardrobe choice at Prince Andrew’s 1986 wedding may have been her last of its kind, for a reason.
The late monarch famously wore shades of blue to every major royal wedding in the early years, including Princess Margaret’s nuptials in 1960, Princess Anne’s in 1973, Prince Charles and Diana’s in 1981, and finally, Prince Andrew’s wedding to Sarah Ferguson in 1986.
For each event, her ensembles ranged from light blue and royal navy to a bold periwinkle, her go-to hue for family celebrations. But here’s the twist: every single one of those marriages ended in divorce.
After that, Queen Elizabeth never wore blue to a wedding again.
The shift was subtle but significant. For Princess Anne’s second wedding in 1992, the Queen wore forest green. At Prince Edward’s 1999 ceremony, she chose lilac.
For the religious blessing of Charles and Camilla’s marriage in 2005, she donned ivory.
And for the weddings of her grandsons, Prince William and Prince Harry, she stood out in bright yellow and lime green.
While blue remained a royal staple for public appearances, People magazine once dubbed the Queen’s previous wedding-day blues a “bad omen.”
