As Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrate 14 years of marriage, a sweet story has resurfaced about how Queen Elizabeth II stepped in to make sure William was truly happy on his big day.

According to The Sunday Times' Roya Nikkhah, speaking in the BBC documentary Royal Wedding: A Day to Remember, Prince William was left feeling "bemused" when he saw the initial guest list, packed with names he and Kate barely recognized.

"When the guest list was drawn up, [Prince William] was very bemused and had a conversation with the Queen to say, 'I don't know any of these people,'" Nikkhah revealed. "He wasn't very happy about it."

In a rare show of flexibility, Queen Elizabeth gave her grandson the green light to start over.

"The Queen just said to him, 'Rip that list up and start where you want to start from and invite who you want' — and that's what they did," Nikkhah said.

Thanks to the late Queen’s support, William and Kate filled Westminster Abbey with 2,000 guests, including family, close friends, foreign royals, government leaders, and celebrities from the worlds of sports and entertainment.

Among those invited was John Haley, the landlord of Kate’s local pub, The Old Boot Inn, who said: "It was great that Kate and William were allowed to invite all their own friends. It was fabulous."

When did William and Kate tie the knot?

The Prince and Princess of Wales tied the knot on April 29, 2011, in a grand ceremony at Westminster Abbey — a wedding watched by millions around the world.

Kate stunned in a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen gown, and William stood at the altar in full military dress, flanked by his brother, Prince Harry, as best man.

The couple is now parents to son, Prince George, 11, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six.
