Thomas Markle’s absence from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s 2018 royal wedding made headlines at the time, with many blaming staged paparazzi photos and reported health issues.
But according to a royal insider, the real reason may be far more personal.
In a new report shared by royal author Sally Bedell Smith on her Substack, Lady Elizabeth Anson, a cousin and close confidant of Queen Elizabeth II, claimed that Thomas Markle was simply “frightened” to attend the royal event.
Though accessibility issues at St George’s Chapel were a concern—he reportedly “didn’t do steps”, Anson said fear ultimately kept him away from walking his daughter down the aisle.
In his absence, King Charles stepped in to escort Meghan partway, in a moment that was both historic and emotionally symbolic.
Despite their strained relationship, Thomas Markle has stated he’s open to reconciliation with Meghan.
He has never met Prince Harry or his two grandchildren, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Earlier this year, Markle moved from Mexico to Southeast Asia with his son, Thomas Jr., as a legal battle looms with his other daughter, Samantha Markle.
