Queen Elizabeths 1947 wedding cake slice gets sold for £3k as buyer plans to eat it

A slice of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s wedding cake from 1947 has been sold at auction for nearly £3,000, and the buyer plans to eat it.

The 77-year-old slice, made from alcohol-soaked fruitcake, was part of the original 9-foot-tall cake designed by McVitie and Price’s chief confectioner.

Stored in its original box with an EP cypher and wartime packaging marked “On His Majesty’s Service,” the cake was originally gifted to Royal Navy officer Chief Petty Officer F. Lownes.

After changing hands within the family for decades, the historic slice was sold for £2,000 (plus fees) to royal enthusiast Gerry Layton at Reeman Dansie Auctioneers in Essex.

Layton says he will eat a third of the cake, flambéed in rum, during a royal-themed birthday banquet aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia in 2026.

"If anything happens to me, at least I’ll be going out in style,” Layton told The Telegraph.

Another slice of the same cake was sold last year for £2,200 to a Chinese bidder. Royal fruitcake: not just for display anymore.
