Indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch surprisingly took the win for the Golden Lion at the Venice film festival.
Called Father Mother Sister Brother and starring Cate Blanchett, it is a three part project focusing on the unstable relationships between parents and adult children.
Despite receiving positive reviews, many critics had made clear their preference for Voice of Hind Rajab to be the winner. However, it ended up taking home the runner-up Silver Lion.
Besides Blanchett, the movie features a stellar cast including Tom Waits, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Vicky Krieps, Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat.
On his win, Jarmusch remarked, “All of us here who make films, we’re not motivated by competition. But this is something I truly appreciate, this unexpected honour.”
Elsewhere, the best director win went to Benny Safdie for the Smashing Machine, while Dwayne Johnson was applauded for his portrayal of real-life mixed martial arts pioneer Mark Kerr.
In his acceptance speech, Safdie remarked, “To be here amongst the giants of the past and the giants here this year, it just blows my mind.”
The movies that left the festival empty handed included three Netflix projects including A House of Dynamite, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly.
