Meghan Markles Sussex surname error called out by royal expert

Meghan Markle has been criticised for making an “extraordinary” blunder about her royal name after insisting her legal surname is now “Sussex.”

The Duchess of Sussex, 44, made the claim in a new interview with journalist Emily Chang to promote season two of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan.

Meghan, who previously corrected actress Mindy Kaling on her show for calling her “Meghan Markle,” doubled down in the interview, saying her “legal name is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.”

But according to royal commentator Victoria Arbiter, the statement was not only incorrect, but also highly revealing.

“This is extraordinary,” Arbiter told 9Honey

“That format, ‘Firstname, Title of Place,’ is traditionally used for divorced royal women - like Diana, Princess of Wales or Sarah, Duchess of York. Meghan is not divorced, so to claim that as her legal name is wrong.”

Arbiter added that Meghan’s repeated emphasis on her title highlights how much she relies on her royal ties.

“It always comes back to the royal in-laws. That’s their biggest cash cow to milk,” she said.

King Charles’s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten also recently dismissed Meghan’s claim that “Sussex” is the family surname, insisting Harry and Meghan’s legal surname remains Mountbatten-Windsor.
