Meghan Markle has reignited debate over her identity after using her royal title to confirm her “real name” during a new interview with journalist Emily Chang.
The conversation, released on the same day Netflix dropped season two of With Love, Meghan, touched on confusion surrounding whether “Sussex” is her surname.
The Duchess of Sussex explained: “Well, when I got married, I changed my name. But it is a complicated one for people to understand because a last name is not typical in that construct.”
She continued, “It’s a dukedom, and that’s the truth of it. But at the end of the day, yes, my legal name is Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Sussex works for us as our family name and it is the name we share with our children.”
However, critics slammed Meghan for “shamelessly” using her royal title despite no longer being a working member of the Firm.
Royal relatives have also disputed her claim. King Charles’s cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten previously said Meghan’s legal surname is actually Mountbatten-Windsor, the same as her husband Harry and their children Archie and Lilibet.
The remarks have once again stirred controversy over Meghan’s complicated relationship with royal titles.
