Why Buckingham Palace is the most unloved royal residence

Buckingham Palace may be one of the most iconic buildings in the world, but behind its grand façade, royals have reportedly never considered it a true “home.”

For centuries, the palace has served as the headquarters of the British monarchy, yet both King Charles and Prince William are set to avoid living there full-time.

The late Queen Elizabeth II did spend much of her reign at Buckingham Palace after Winston Churchill advised her to make it her primary residence.

But since taking the throne in 2022, King Charles has continued to live at Clarence House, officially citing ongoing renovations.

Prince William, 43, is also expected to snub the historic palace when he becomes king, preferring Forest Lodge in Windsor as his family’s “forever home.”

Royal historian Robert Lacey explained why the palace has struggled to win over its residents.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he said: “I don’t think it was ever loved. If you read what kings have said in their diaries, it was always seen as an office.”

Lacey described it as “bleak,” likening it to “an Edwardian hotel in Brighton” with cold rooms and long, lifeless corridors.

Despite its lack of warmth, Buckingham Palace will remain the monarchy’s ceremonial and administrative hub.
