Prince Harry revealed in his memoir Spare that an “awkward moment” once unfolded between Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle during their first joint appearance as a royal foursome.
In February 2018, months before Meghan and Harry’s wedding, the then-Duchess-to-be attended the Royal Foundation Forum alongside William and Kate.
According to Harry, an uncomfortable exchange took place when Meghan, having forgotten her lip gloss, turned to Kate for help.
“Meg asked to borrow Kate’s lip gloss. An American thing,” Harry recalled.
“Kate, taken aback, went into her handbag and reluctantly pulled out a small tube. Meg squeezed some onto her finger and applied it to her lips. Kate grimaced.”
Harry suggested the seemingly minor incident reflected deeper cultural differences between the two women, writing: “Something we should’ve been able to laugh about soon after. But it left a little mark.”
He also speculated that Kate may have been “on edge,” worrying about being compared to Meghan as the media spotlight on the two women intensified.
While Harry’s account painted the moment as the beginning of tensions, Princess Kate has never publicly commented on the claim.
