David Harbour has joined the cast of the new John Rambo prequel, stepping into the boots of the legendary character’s commanding officer Major Trautman.

The 51-year-old Stranger Things star is set to appear alongside Noah Centineo, who will play a young John Rambo in the film exploring the origins of Sylvester Stallone’s iconic action hero.

According to Variety, the project is being directed by Jalmari Helander, with filming expected to take place in Bangkok, Thailand.

The story will go back to Rambo’s time in Vietnam with the Green Berets, long before the events of First Blood.

The cast also includes Yao, Jason Tobin, Quincy Isaiah, Jefferson White and Tayme Thapthimthong.

Stallone won’t appear on screen but is heavily involved as executive producer.

He has previously written the first five Rambo films and directed 2008’s Rambo, making his return to the franchise a major boost for fans.

In a video shared on Instagram, the 79-year-old actor said Rambo has been “a huge part of my life” and described the upcoming film as “the beginning” of the character’s story.

He added that he is excited to help bring the origin tale to life.

Director Helander called the project “stripped down, raw and real”, revealing that First Blood inspired him from a young age and shaped his filmmaking ambitions.

Lionsgate has also welcomed Stallone’s involvement, calling it a “critical piece” of the project as the franchise gears up for a new era.

Fans of the franchise have already expressed excitement online as the action saga prepares to reboot its origins for a new generation.
