Avengers: Doomsday creators opened up about why Robert Downey Jr was chose as Doctor Doom.
After 11-year run as Tony Stark/Iron Man, which concluded with billionaire tech genius death by snap in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Marvel re-introduced Downey Jr in new light.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, told the Entertainment Weekly during the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, "[Downey Jr] is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU for obvious reasons, and we would talk about when and how and if there could be a return."
Roughly three and half year ago the makers of this interconnected superhero universe decided to bring Doctor Victor Von Doom to the screen.
Around that time the Tropic Thunder star was on his way to win his first ever Oscar for Oppenheimer and being hailed by many as "'the greatest actor in the world.'"
With the surge in his popularity and critical acclaim, Feige and his team decided to bring him back in MCU.
“It's our universe. It's a multiverse. We can do whatever the heck we want. He played the most iconic hero. Let's have him play the most iconic villain," he said.
Teasing Doom’s power, The Russos said, "Certainly with Doom, it's the problem in the extreme in that his power is so immense and so beyond."
He noted that portraying Doctor Doom’s vulnerabilities and inner complexities allows the filmmakers to have creative freedom, especially in exploring the contrast between his immense power and his deeply protected emotional weaknesses.
So far the confirmed cast includes the original Avengers, Black Panther, Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*/New Avengers, The Fantastic Four, and the original X-Men.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on December 18.
