How Queen Elizabeth spent her final days at Balmoral

Three years after Queen Elizabeth II’s death, a former royal staffer has revealed intimate details of her final days.

The monarch passed away aged 96 on September 8, 2022, just 17 months after losing her beloved husband, Prince Philip.

Former royal butler Paul Burrell has now shared what life was like for the Queen in her last months, confirming she was quietly battling cancer.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Burrell said: “The Queen had been very poorly during her last days and was mainly bedridden. She was 96 and had refused any more treatment.”

The diagnosis reportedly came during the summer of 2021, weeks after Philip’s death, leaving her devastated. Burrell revealed that even in her decline, the Queen remained committed to her routines.

“Lunch was at 1pm, tea at 5pm and dinner at 8.15pm whenever possible. But she stopped going for meals in the dining room … she was eating very little,” he explained.

Her appearance also gave away her fragile health. “Her dresses weren’t fitting properly, and she was looking paler and thinner. The monarch was fading away in front of the nation’s eyes,” Burrell recalled.

Fittingly, the Queen passed at Balmoral, her most beloved home.

Burrell said most staff were unaware of what had happened that day, with estate workers continuing as normal until the news was announced.
