King Charless reign hit by two major problems: cancer and royal rift

As King Charles marks three years on the throne, a royal expert claims his reign has already been overshadowed by two major issues.

The monarch, 76, became King in September 2022 following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Since then, he has celebrated key milestones, from his first State Visit to his Christmas address, but has also faced personal and public challenges.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the Express: “There is no doubt his reign has, apart from ill health, been beset by two problems: that of Harry and Meghan, though less so recently, but the rift remains deep, and that of Andrew.”

Fitzwilliams argued that the Sussexes’ ongoing presence in the media has been a double-edged sword: boosting their personal brand while often overshadowing positive royal news.

Meanwhile, Prince Andrew continues to cast a long shadow after his scandal.

Charles himself has faced another battle, cancer, which Fitzwilliams called “extraordinary bad luck so early in his reign.”

Still, the King has worked to project continuity, delivering a moving speech after his mother’s death and representing the monarchy at high-profile global events.
