Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s renewed Netflix agreement is already sparking hot takes, and one pundit says the streamer now has the couple “over a barrel.”
The Sussexes confirmed a new multi-year first-look deal last week, four years after their 2020 pact. But broadcaster Esther Craichu argued on The Sun’s Royal Exclusive that the arrangement is essentially a retainer with right of first refusal, and little upfront commitment from Netflix.
“It’s basically: be entertaining or don’t bother,” Craichu said, suggesting the platform is only likely to bite if Harry and Meghan deliver genuinely buzzy content.
She even hinted the streamer is hoping for “juicy royal tea,” quipping that only explosive family revelations, or a dramatic relationship turn, would guarantee a greenlight.
Craichu framed the setup as the “best of both worlds” for Netflix: the Sussex name draws attention, but the company isn’t staking big money unless a project screams hit.
As for the couple, who are now California-based, the takeaway is blunt, the next slate must land.
Their fresh first-look gives them access, but not a blank check.
Netflix hasn’t disclosed terms or duration of the extension.
For now, all eyes are on what Harry and Meghan pitch next, and whether it delivers the headlines the streamer can’t refuse.
