A royal family member is speaking out, and challenging the late Queen’s private disapproval of Meghan Markle’s wedding gown.
Maddison May Brudenell, Prince William’s cousin and great-granddaughter of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, says Queen Elizabeth II was too traditional in her belief that Meghan’s white wedding dress was “inappropriate” for a divorcée.
Ingrid Seward’s 2023 royal biography My Mother and I revealed that the late monarch quietly disapproved of Meghan’s stunning Givenchy gown, reportedly calling it “too white” for someone previously married.
Now, Maddison, who herself wore ivory for her second wedding last year, says the Queen’s opinion was outdated.
“In the monarch’s view, it was not appropriate for a divorcée getting remarried in church to look quite so flamboyantly virginal,” she told MailOnline.
“My mother, the Queen’s goddaughter, said the same. But I respectfully disagreed.”
Maddison wed Canadian welder Bret Kapetanov in November 2023, wearing a custom white gown by Laura Green, echoing Meghan’s bold fashion choice from her 2018 royal wedding.
“I was sad thinking about the past during what should’ve been a joyful time,” she admitted, “but my mum was speaking out of love. In the end, she respected my decision.”
Meghan’s iconic dress featured a minimalist boat neckline, symbolic floral embroidery, and Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara.
