The docu-series The Mortician has proven to be a real-life horror story as director Joshua Rofé explores the unsettling case of a real-life mortician who was imprisoned for mistreating the dead.
The man who inspired the series, David Sconce, was accredited for increasing the cremation business after he took over his family’s funeral home called the Lamb Funeral Home in Pasadena, California.
However, Sconce’s ex-employees, those of which were interviewed, noted that they were horrified by their boss’s modes of operation, the series also contains snippets from customers who had received incorrect remains as a result of his malpractice.
Sconce was convicted in the 1980s after he carried out nightmarish practices like robbing the corpses of internal organs, gold jewelry and dental filings, all of which fetch a pretty penny in the markets, which is why he would end up selling them.
The criminal, who plead guilty to his charges, would also deliver fake ashes to friends and family of the deceased.
Rofé noted that viewers of the show could draw conclusions that lead to the broader conversation of other scandals that have come to light, such as companies and industries compromising on ethicality to make profits.
However, when the same idea takes hold of individuals in the funeral industry, “it's pretty damn gruesome.”
The Mortician premiered on June 1, on the streaming platform HBO Max. The first episode of the three-part series is currently available for viewing.
