King Charles is mourning the death of Pope Francis, but the beloved pontiff’s final act brought him comfort.
Following the Pope’s passing at age 88 on Easter Monday, April 21, the British monarch issued a heartfelt statement via Buckingham Palace, reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the spiritual leader.
“My wife and I were most deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pope Francis,” he shared.
The King added, “Our heavy hearts have been somewhat eased, however, to know that His Holiness was able to share an Easter Greeting with the Church and the world he served with such devotion throughout his life and ministry.”
The day before his passing, the Pope had delivered his Easter address and met with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.
Charles remembered the pontiff for his compassion and global impact.
“His belief that care for Creation is an existential expression of faith in God resounded with so many across the world,” he said, adding that Francis “profoundly touched the lives of so many.”
The King also recalled a personal highlight: visiting the Pope earlier in April alongside Queen Camilla to mark their 20th wedding anniversary. Their private meeting had been postponed due to the Pope’s health struggles.
Vatican News confirmed Pope Francis died at his residence in the Vatican after a long battle with illness, including a recent hospitalisation for double pneumonia.
