James McAvoy opened up about a brutal review he received during his early years in the X-Men franchise.
The Scottish actor, who made his debut as young Professor Charles Xavier in 2011a X-Men: First Class.
He went on to reprise the role in Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and the Dark Pheonix, becoming fan favourite in the mutant saga.
However, despite the film earning widespread acclaim the strong box office success, The Chronicles of Narnia star revealed in a recent appearance on The Romesh Ranganathan Show that he tends to avoid reading reviews.
“I cannot tell you one review that I had for X-Men that was good and I can, tell you the one review from X-Men that I remember was bad,” he said.
While acknowledging there were “tons of good ones,” the Split admitted he simply cannot shake off the negative feedback.
He further explained, “This is the weird thing as and its not even about you acting, this is why it is dangerous to read reviews; it isn’t the work that upsets you, it’s sort of the cattiness that’s inherently part of critiquing where its’ like they need to stand out of something anyway.”
McAvoy’s comments highlights the emotional toll that personal jabs in criticism can take on actors, even amid career highs.
Besides starring the Marvel’s X-Men movies, James made a cameo as Xavier in Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 2.
