Joe Biden has put Donald Trump’s tumultuous presidency to an end as he was elected as the 46th president of the United States, as projected by CNN.

According to CNN, the former vice president won 20 electoral votes in his home state of Pennsylvania bringing his count to 273. He is set to address the nation on Saturday night, it was reported.

The Democrat’s running mate Kamala Harris has become the first woman and first person of colour to become the vice president.

After being projecting the winner, Biden turned to Twitter and expressed gratitude to his supporters for choosing him as the leader of the country.

"America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country. The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not. I will keep the faith that you have placed in me," he wrote.
