Former King Juan Carlos of Spain has denied long-standing rumours of an affair with Princess Diana, just days before the release of his controversial memoir, Reconciliation.
The 87-year-old ex-monarch, who abdicated in 2014 amid scandal, reportedly describes Diana as “cold” and “distant” in his book, recounting her visits to Marivent Palace in Mallorca during the late 1980s with then-Prince Charles.
While the trips were seen as strengthening ties between the British and Spanish royal families, rumours swirled for years that Juan Carlos had taken a personal interest in the Princess of Wales.
According to early excerpts, the former king denies any impropriety and insists his relationship with Diana was strictly cordial.
However, his description of her demeanour as “taciturn” around the press has reignited debate over the late royal’s private struggles.
Biographer Andrew Morton previously claimed Diana referred to Juan Carlos as “a very libidinous man,” reportedly telling friends she “felt uncomfortable being left alone with him.”
