Just two days after her fairytale wedding, Princess Diana poured her heart out in a handwritten letter, and it’s now resurfaced, revealing the royal’s quiet heartbreak behind palace doors.
The emotional note, written on July 31, 1981, was addressed to Mark Simpson, a young footman at Buckingham Palace who quickly became one of Diana’s few confidants during those isolating early days.
In the newly revealed letter, Diana writes: "My stay was made so much easier by your company as it was so terribly lonely... we had so many laughs, for that I can't thank you enough."
"What with all those men around, I will have to keep a watchful eye on Evelyn!"
She signed off with a relatable line: “The bad news is that I haven't eaten any cereal - sob.”
The letter is now one of the star items being auctioned at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills on June 26, offering a rare glimpse into the vulnerable, playful, and deeply human side of the People’s Princess.
Julien's co-founder Martin Nolan told People: “This letter speaks volumes. She was transitioning from normal life into the Royal Family... It shows how lonely she felt — but also how fun and cheeky she could be.”
