King Charles makes historic visit to Vatican

King Charles met Pope Leo XIV in a historic event marking a significant moment for the church’s history.

The British monarch arrived in the Vatican city with his wife, Queen Camila.

The 76-year-old prayed with the pope in the church marking the first time in 500 years the two leaders of the Church of England and the Catholic Church to have prayed together in a joint service.

Photographs from the event were shared on the royal family’s Instagram which featured the two leaders.

The post was captioned “The King and Queen, accompanied by Pope Leo, have attended a special service in the Sistine Chapel.”

The caption also included the significance of the moment which was the joining of hands between the two leaders.

In the ceremony, the royal couple can be seen seated in front of Michelangelo’s “Last Judgement” which was painted between 1536 and 1541.

The British King became the first head of the Anglican church to pray in public with a Pope.

The historic event was significant as it took place exactly half a century since the Reformation, Church of England’s separation from the Vatican.

Since the 16th century, the two churches have been divided over issues.
