King Charles reportedly took a page from Winston Churchill’s playbook when preparing the British public to accept Queen Camilla, according to royal biographer Andrew Morton.

Speaking to PEOPLE about his new book Winston and the Windsors, Morton revealed that Charles “played the long game”, mirroring Churchill’s philosophy of patience and gradual public acceptance.

“Churchill’s approach was to introduce controversial relationships slowly to the public,” Morton said. “That’s exactly how Charles did it.”

After years of public skepticism following Princess Diana’s death in 1997, Charles and Camilla carefully rebuilt their image.

The then-Prince of Wales reportedly told aides that Camilla was a “non-negotiable” part of his life, and the couple gradually gained acceptance, culminating in their 2005 wedding and her eventual ascension as Queen.

“Camilla started as Duchess of Cornwall, became Queen Consort, and now simply Queen, without any rioting in the streets,” Morton said.
