The late Queen Elizabeth II would have been “deeply grieved” by Prince Andrew’s downfall and his decision to relinquish his Duke of York title, according to royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams.
Following the release of a statement from Buckingham Palace confirming Andrew will no longer use his royal titles or honours amid the continuing Jeffrey Epstein scandal, experts say the late monarch would have been heartbroken.
Fitzwilliams told the Express: “She devoted her whole life to duty and service. To see her favourite son disgraced like this would have deeply saddened her.”
He added that Queen Elizabeth’s special bond with Andrew stemmed from spending more time with him during his childhood compared to her older children.
In his statement, the 65-year-old Duke said: “In discussion with The King and my family, we have concluded that the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family.”
He reiterated that he “vigorously denies” all allegations made by the late Virginia Giuffre.
