Prince Andrew resisted becoming a commoner after title loss, insider claims

Prince Andrew was reportedly “reluctant” to surrender his royal titles and transition into life as a “commoner,” according to royal author Nigel Cawthorne.

In a statement released by Buckingham Palace last Friday, the Duke of York, 65, confirmed he would no longer use his title or any honours “conferred upon him,” following renewed scrutiny over his association with Jeffrey Epstein and allegations made by the late Virginia Giuffre, all of which Andrew denies.

The decision was reportedly made after discussions with King Charles and Prince William, both said to have pushed for a clean break.

Author Nigel Cawthorne, who wrote Prince Andrew, Epstein and the Palace, told the Express: “It seems every act of contrition is reluctant and too little, too late. He’s never wanted to fully let go of his royal privilege.”

Cawthorne added that Andrew could have “simply become a commoner and used the family name Mountbatten-Windsor,” but was unwilling to relinquish royal status entirely.
