Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated The Life of a Showgirl has been released, and many listeners are casting doubt on its glowing reviews.
The album has already broken streaming records within a day of its release, but many wonder if it’s simply the power of the global popstar’s overwhelmingly large fan-following or the snappy tracks themselves.
After the Message In A Bottle singer promised that there were only “bangers” in her twelfth album, it appears that not all her fans and music lovers seem to think so.
The 12-track record received a polarising five stars from Rolling Stone magazine, and a two from The Guardian, making the discussion around the new drop even more confusing.
A group of internet users took to Reddit to discuss the former’s review, with the original poster writing, “I came across a tweet showing how Rolling Stones reviewed past Taylor Swifts albums and how they were all in the 90-100 range and it got me feeling that they are biased?”
“I’ve given it one listen through so far and my first impression is that she created a very generic pop album, designed to appeal to the masses. The backing tracks are very similar song-to-song and the first half of the album wasn’t doing anything for me,” said a netizen on the Taylor Swift sub-reddit.
"Music journalism is almost always marketing in diguise, I cannot believe how many people dont know this already," one wrote, while others agreed that that a number of exceptionally good reviews were out of fear of backlash.
Notably, a number of switfties have said that the songs will take some getting used to and repeated listening to really click, while others said that they liked it more the second time around they heard the album.
The Fate of Ophelia is the most streamed song off of The Life of a Showgirl on Spotify.
