Sean “Diddy” Combs broke down in tears as his defense team played a video highlighting his life during his sentencing hearing, following a high-profile federal trial.
On Friday, October 3, Combs is set to be sentenced after being convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.
During the hearing, Combs’ attorney, Nicole Westmoreland, reflected on how he had influenced lives as a young Black label founder.
“Mr. Combs starting his own record label as a Black, young male back then was almost kind of jokeable. But he had the audacity to do it anyway,” Westmoreland said, per CNN, noting that his work “changed the industry, and it changed the culture, but more importantly, it changed countless individuals’ lives.”
“Because,” she continued, “what people recognized is that if Mr. Combs could do it, then they could do it too.”
She added that Combs’ clothing line had a similar impact, and once he achieved success, he lifted up others in his community “that most people wouldn’t have given a shot,” according to the outlet.
After her remarks, Combs’ defense team played a 12-minute video portraying his life and legacy.
As the video played in a silent courtroom, the convicted rapper covered his face with his hand and began to weep, his shoulders shaking, according to the AP.
Fans of Combs were also present in the courtroom to show their support.
