'Maleficent 3': Angelina Jolie’s return confirmed?

Angelina Jolie’s fantasy epic Maleficent bewitched audiences worldwide, soaring to the top of the box office.

The franchise has proved a major win for Disney, with the 2014 original grossing an impressive $758.8 million and its 2019 follow-up still securing $377.8 million across the globe.

A third chapter was announced in 2021, with Jolie and longtime screenwriter Linda Woolverton attached, though a director is yet to be finalised.

The Oscar winner, now 50, recently admitted she would “love” to don Maleficent’s wings again, much to the delight of fans.

Meanwhile, Joachim Rønning, who helmed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, has suggested he may revisit the magical realm. 

Speaking to Screen Rant, the 53-year-old Norwegian filmmaker was asked directly about the possibility of returning.

“That’s a good question,” he replied carefully. “I’m always interested in a strong story. For me, that’s what matters most. So, we’ll see what the future brings.”

Currently directing Disney’s upcoming Tron: Ares, Rønning reflected on how both Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and his 2017 hit Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales were pivotal in shaping his career.

“I have a lot of love for both projects,” he added. “They changed my life.”
