James Gunn addresses SURPRISE Superman cameo in ‘Peacemaker’ S2

DC Studios co-head James Gunn addressed the unexpected Superman cameo in Peacemaker season 2 and how it could impact the entire DC Universe.

In episode 6, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) shows up at Belle Reeve Prison to visit Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). He seeks to strike a deal with the former LuthorCorp CEO as part of his vendetta against Chris (John Cena).

On HBO Max’s Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn explained that Luthor’s cameo in season 2 marks a pivotal moment for the DCU.

“This is one of the first things we shot. We shot it in the middle of Superman, while we were filming the Pentagon scenes,” the director revealed about the cameo.

Further elaborating on its significance, Gunn added, “So, we have a really important moment, not only for Peacemaker but for the entire DCU. Rick Flag, the head of A.R.G.U.S., basically strikes a deal with Lex Luthor in exchange for finding where Peacemaker’s portal might be.”

“He is going to move him from a prison with metahumans to a prison without them,” Gunn continued. “From Belle Reeve, where they are now, to Van Kull. Then he leaves and tells Sol, Sasha Bordeaux, that he’s teamed up with Lex Luthor — which is terrifying."

Gunn concluded by noting that someone with Flag's powers and a personal agenda, "is a real threat to our boy, Peacemaker.”
