Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey has sparked a wave of online backlash after the film’s newly released trailer drew more dislikes than likes on YouTube fueling debate over its dialogue, tone and casting.
The film which is set for release in July 2026 stars Matt Damon, Zendaya and a large ensemble cast in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
But instead of simply building anticipation the first trailer has quickly become one of the most divisive movie releases of the year.
Much of the criticism has focused on the trailer’s modern-sounding dialogue and accents with some viewers arguing that the characters sound too contemporary for a story rooted in ancient mythology.
Others have taken issue with casting choices saying the film does not match their expectations of how Homer’s world should look or feel on screen.
Some viewers expected a more traditional, classical treatment of that material. Instead the trailer presents a version of the story with contemporary speech patterns, mixed accents and a modern cinematic tone that caught many by surprise.
Casting has become another flashpoint in the conversation. Some online critics have questioned choices for major roles, including Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.
Scholars have also weighed in on the conversation. Professor Susan Deacy suggested that audiences may be treating mythological material too much like historical fact.
“I wonder whether we have become inclined to treat mythological material as though it were historical material,” she said.
Others, however, argue that there is no “correct” way for a Greek myth to sound in a modern English-language film making every accent and dialogue choice a matter of creative interpretation rather than historical accuracy.
Despite the backlash the film remains one of the most anticipated titles on the 2026 release calendar.
Supporters say Nolan’s scale, ambition and star-studded cast still make The Odyssey one of the biggest cinematic events of the decade regardless of the controversy surrounding its trailer.
Whether the criticism fades or intensifies the reaction has already turned Nolan’s retelling of Homer’s epic into one of the most hotly debated film projects of the year.
