Pierre Coffin has revealed why the Minions franchise has never introduced a female version of its iconic yellow characters.

The 59-year-old filmmaker, who co-created the hugely successful animated stars and voices every Minion, admitted the idea has been explored over the years.

However, he believes adding female Minions simply to satisfy audiences would risk feeling "tokenistic" rather than a natural creative choice.

Speaking to The Guardian, Coffin said he suspects some would see the move as an attempt to please female viewers, but he isn't convinced it would have the desired effect.

Instead, he suggested many women might view it as an unnecessary gesture rather than meaningful representation.

The director revealed that he and his fellow writers once toyed with a storyline in which the Minions landed on an island inhabited by what appeared to be female Minions.

Despite the intriguing concept, the idea never progressed beyond the early planning stages.

Coffin also joked that, in his imagination, female Minions would look exactly the same as the male ones.

And when asked how the creatures reproduce, he offered a characteristically quirky answer: "They don't. They just are."

Beyond the debate, Coffin said he has become increasingly protective of the Minions as the franchise has evolved.

While they originally appeared as one chaotic group, later films introduced distinct personalities such as Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto, giving audiences characters they could connect with.
