How Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's secret Canada trip sparked Megxit rumours

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle kept one of their biggest moves under wraps in 2019, so secret, in fact, that even their closest staff had no idea what was going on.

In November of that year, the Sussexes quietly left the UK for a six-week break, flying to Canada to spend Thanksgiving with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland. 

At the time, the couple marked the holiday with an Instagram post featuring a Canadian emoji, sparking confusion since November Thanksgiving is American, not Canadian. 

Still, the Palace described the trip as “family time” rather than a holiday.

According to royal author Valentine Low in Courtiers, Meghan was so determined to avoid leaks that even their nanny, Lorren, wasn’t told their destination until the plane was in the air. 

The couple reportedly flew on a private jet, not Air Canada as suggested in Finding Freedom.

Behind the scenes, staff had been growing suspicious of Harry and Meghan’s long-term plans. 

Low revealed some aides only discovered the couple weren’t returning to royal life when Meghan admitted it to a staffer at the end of the year. 

By January 2020, during a Buckingham Palace meeting, the rest of the team finally learned the truth.
