Kate Middleton stunned royal watchers this week as she attended the state banquet at Windsor Castle for US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania.
The Princess of Wales dazzled in a gold Phillipa Lepley gown, the late Queen Elizabeth’s diamond earrings, and her go-to headpiece: the iconic Lover’s Knot tiara.
The dazzling diadem, worth an estimated £1 million, has a long royal history, having been worn by Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Diana before Kate.
Commissioned in 1914 by Queen Mary of Teck, the tiara is famed for its dramatic design of diamonds and swinging pearls.
The tiara is notoriously heavy, weighing 2.2 ounces, and even noisy, thanks to its dangling pearls.
Princess Diana, who frequently wore the tiara, was said to suffer headaches because of its weight.
Jewellery expert Maxwell Stone explained: “Though an incredible piece, the tiara has its cons. It’s claimed to be so heavy that it hurt the late Princess of Wales’ head, giving her headaches. The swinging pearls are also said to make it noisy.”
