Robert Redford, the Oscar-winning star, has left a profound void in many hearts, including that of filmmaker James Gunn.

After nearly seven decades in Hollywood, news of Redford’s death spread on Tuesday, September 16, following confirmation from his publicist, Cindi Berger.

Filmmakers, actors, and fans took to social media to express their sorrow over the loss of the skilful actor and director.

On Instagram, DC Studios head James Gunn shared a tribute to the Oscar winner.

“I grew up with his movies: his quiet, unforced performances and ever-present grace,” the Superman director wrote. “He was THE movie star, and will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, Robert.”

Gunn followed the caption with a list of his 10 favourite Redford films, “that isn’t The Sting or Butch Cassidy.”

The list included Three Days of the Condor, All the President’s Men, The Natural, All Is Lost, and Ordinary People.

The actor, who passed away at 89, appeared in more than 50 films, built a wide-ranging television career in the 1960s, and made his mark behind the camera as a director and producer.

An Oscar winner and founder of the Sundance Film Festival, he starred in classics including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Way We Were, and All the President’s Men.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, he died early Tuesday at his Utah mountain home, “the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” his longtime publicist said.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Sibylle Szaggars, and his daughters, Shauna and Amy.
