The late Queen Elizabeth II reportedly had a very firm response when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle asked for a photographer to capture her first meeting with their daughter, Princess Lilibet.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex brought their children to the UK in June 2022 for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, a trip that marked Lilibet’s first birthday and her only meeting with her great-grandmother.
According to reports, Harry and Meghan requested a private photographer to document the encounter.
The Queen’s reply was blunt: there was “no chance.”
Royal aides explained the moment was to remain a private family meeting, with concerns that personal images might later surface on American television if taken by the couple’s chosen photographer.
In his memoir Spare, Harry fondly recalled the encounter, sharing how Archie performed “deep bows” while baby Lilibet clung to the monarch’s legs.
The Queen, he wrote, affectionately remarked that they were the “sweetest children,” though she expected them to be “a bit more American.”
The naming of Princess Lilibet had also sparked controversy.
Biographer Robert Hardman claimed the Queen was “outraged” when Harry and Meghan suggested they had her blessing to use her private nickname, something palace insiders denied.
