Queen Elizabeth's 'astonishing' view on Brexit revealed

Queen Elizabeth II famously stayed neutral on political issues throughout her 70-year reign, but a new revelation sheds light on her true feelings about Brexit.

While members of the royal family are technically allowed to vote, they almost never do so in order to preserve political neutrality. 

The late monarch, however, occasionally shared private thoughts with trusted ministers. 

Former Chancellor George Osborne said he was “astonished” by how candid she could be, noting that she often gave “forthright” opinions on people and politics behind closed doors.

According to The Times, a senior minister who spoke with the Queen in 2016 recalled her blunt five-word take on the EU referendum: “We shouldn’t leave the EU.”

She reportedly added: “It’s better to stick with the devil you know,” making clear she leaned toward Remain if she had been able to vote.

Although the Queen occasionally mocked “Brussels bureaucracy” as “ridiculous,” she ultimately viewed the EU as a stabilizing force in Europe, part of the postwar settlement that promoted peace after two devastating conflicts.

Her rare private comment offers a striking glimpse into the personal convictions of a monarch who outwardly embodied political neutrality.
