DC Studios co-head and filmmaker James Gunn has revealed a long-forgotten DC superhero that inspired his upcoming Superman movie — Tom Strong.

The hero, remembered only by true, devoted fans, was brought to life by Alan Moore and Chris Sprouse.

The creators of Tom Strong have left a trail of inspiration that Gunn has woven into his 2025 Superman.

Taking to Threads on Aug. 11, the director — known for using social media to connect with his followers — shared the major source of influence behind the new Superman.

“The more I think about it, the more I realise what a significant influence Alan Moore & Chris Sprouse’s Tom Strong was on the DCU & Superman,” Gunn wrote.

He elaborated, “Like in Superman, we meet a character in a pulpy, fantastical world of pre-existing ‘Science-Heroes’ with established relationships and history.”

Gunn added that he is grateful for how these comics have shaped the DCU’s evolution.

“Although not in regular DC continuity,” he said, “I’m grateful for the ways these comics have shaped our evolving DCU. You can get the collections in fine comic stores everywhere.”
