Freakier Friday has secured one of the topmost spots in terms of box office success, which is a fitting response to the movie’s critics.

The cult-classic’s sequel was highly anticipated by fans, and its earnings are a good indicator that people stand in support of the Mark Waters directed film.

As per Deadline, the comedy has exceeded expectations by grossing an estimated $29 million domestically and $42 million in North America, coming second to Zach Cregger’s horror thriller Weapons, which has secured around $70 million globally.

This is a huge milestone for the Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan feature, since it has met its reported budget with this opening weekend reception.

The achievement comes just a day after the 66-year-old made headlines for defending the sequel against a critic’s review.

“SEEMS a TAD HARSH. SOME people LOVE it. Me being one,” she wrote under Stephanie Zacharek’s remarks.

The expert had called the film humiliating for everyone involved, adding that it had ugly costumes and zero value, but was met with disagreement from fans and netizens.

Notably, even though Freakier Friday has recouped its budget, it will take a lot more for the project to be called profitable.

How much did Freaky Friday make at its debut weekend?

The original, 2003 movie made $22.2 million domestically when it first came out, before climbing its way to $160.8 million worldwide.
