Universal and DreamWorks Animation have announced that the release date for the highly anticipated Shrek 5 has been delayed from Dec. 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027.

This is the second time that the movie has been delayed, having originally had the date set for July 2026.

In the new date, the movie will be releasing a week after Sony’s Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

In its previous release date, it would have been competing with Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday and Ice Age 6.

Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are making their return to the franchise, with the new addition of Zendaya.

For directing, Shrek veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn have made a return as well.

“In a bid to get his land back, Shrek agrees to retrieve Princess Fiona for the fairytale-hating Lord Farquaad of Duloc, but falls in love with her on the way,” reads the synopsis of the beloved original from 2001.

After clips and art was released for Shrek 5, it received significant backlash from fans for the starkly different animation style. Viewers also managed to guess at the plot of the film, which is suspected to be one of the major reasons the movie is being delayed.
