Zendaya is taking on a new role as a teaser shared by Universal Pictures confirmed that she will be joining the cast of Shrek 5 along with stars like Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Eddie Murphy.
"Far, Far Away’s finest are coming," they added in the caption.
According to the clip, she will be playing the titular character’s daughter.
Zendaya had tweeted back in 2017 that, "I watch Shrek too often in my adulthood,” and after the news of her casting broke, the official account for Shrek reposted it and wrote, "This aged well."
The original Shrek was released in 2001 to major success and went on to secure an Academy Award for Best Animated Film.
Fans of the movies were not too happy, however, with the new animation for Shrek 5 as one user remarked, “Bring back old animation, WTF IS THIS?”
“please redo the whole movie with the original animation, without tiktok jokes and including puss in boots, as fans we can wait, as long as we have a good movie,” requested another.
Some fans defended it however, as one person claimed, “reading these comments makes me realise how little the general public knows about animation. like shrek 4 came out 15 years ago ofc this is gonna look different.”
Shrek 5 is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 23, 2026.
