The hesitantly anticipated release of the film War of the Worlds with Ice Cube has led to a shocking response.
It is one of the very few films that has received a 0% rating on the review website, Rotten Tomatoes.
So, what are viewers saying?
“A risible attempt to modernise classic science-fiction by adding WhatsApp and political chicanery. This thin, frenetic, soulless adaptation is misguided moviemaking cubed,” wrote a critic.
“War of the Worlds is a tortuous, endless 90 minutes of glitchy video clips, military stock footage, glad-to-be-doing-something actors running through the street waving a camera in front of their faces and pretending to be scared,” added another.
A YouTube reviewer joked, “I really don't like how a lot of modern reviewers say outlandish statements like 'This is the worst movie ever made'. Mainly because it devalues films like War of the Worlds, who had to work really hard to actually be one of the worst movies ever made.”
Others included similar sentiments like, “There’s a lot of keyboard action and screen switching, and perhaps there’s a Big Idea on the state of surveillance in America, but it’s all turned into generic mush as Lee has little to work with beyond remote production clumsiness.”
