John Oliver made himself clear after he responded to Jay Leno’s remarks about the ideal audience for comedy, after the latter shared his views in light of the ongoing cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night show.
The Space Cowboys star had noted that he opted for a “whole” audience and enjoys getting hate from both democratic and republican viewers for his late-night show, since his comedy targets a larger group of people, instead of picking sides.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Last Week Tonight host declared, “I’m going to take a hard pass on taking comedic advice from Jay Leno.”
The thirty-time Primetime Emmy award winner went on to elaborate with, “Comedy can’t be for everyone, it’s inherently subjective.”
Oliver explained that it was completely acceptable for some comedians to opt for a broader audience, but what was also acceptable was the exact opposite of that.
The 48-year-old said that the content on his show targeted systemic issues and he hopes that they impact audiences beyond their political biases.
Oliver ended with a hopeful remark, that even if people do not reach the same solution, he aspires to make them unanimous about the problem.
Colbert’s show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s ending is linked to politics, with the United Stated President, Donald Trump, being the target of many pointed jabs by the 61-year-old.
