Barbie will return to theatres after two years, following its global box office success of $1.4 billion.
Recently, Mattel Studios announced that a new Barbie animated feature film was in development with Illumination. However, no plot or cast details have been released yet.
As reported by Deadline, Universal Pictures will distribute the movie due to their “exclusive financing and distribution partnership with Illumination.”
This will mark the first time an animated Barbie film will see a theatrical release since its debut in 2001 as Barbie in the Nutcracker.
Fans of the beloved character took to social media to express their excitement, with one netizen commenting, “The Barbie land scenes in the live action were the best part, but in animation, it can go 100x better.”
Another fan wrote, “Adapt the Barbie animated movies with the iconic songs, and the Gen Zs/Millennials will eat it up.”
This news follows the huge success of the live-action film two years ago, which grossed $1.44 billion worldwide and received eight Academy Award nominations.
Starring Margot Robbie as the leading lady and Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie went on to win the Best Original Song, What was I made for, by Billie Eilish.
Over two decades, the direct-to-video franchise has produced 52 films featuring Barbie following different professions.
Now with a new animated feature film in development, fans can only hold onto their seats as they await further details.
