As Princess Charlotte turns 10 years old, her mum, Kate Middleton, will likely be up late tonight, not for official duties, but to uphold a heartwarming royal birthday tradition.

The Princess of Wales, 43, is known for personally baking her children’s birthday cakes every year, a tradition she once admitted keeps her in the kitchen well past midnight.

During a 2019 appearance on A Berry Royal Christmas with Dame Mary Berry, Kate shared: “I love making the cake. It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing, and I make far too much. But I love it.”

And it seems the royal mum doesn’t shy away from asking for expert advice. In 2023, Great British Baking Show finalist Alice Fevronia revealed that Kate had asked her for baking tips during a chat at the NHS Big Tea Party.

“She was asking things like, ‘How do you get the buttercream so smooth?’” Fevronia told PEOPLE.

“She mentioned she’d been up quite late decorating birthday cakes for the kids.”

When was Princess Charlotte born?

Princess Charlotte, whose full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, was born at 8:34AM on May 2, 2015, at St Mary’s Hospital in London.

Just hours later, Kate and Prince William introduced their newborn daughter to the world from the steps of the Lindo Wing, waving to adoring crowds.

Charlotte is now the proud middle sibling between Prince George, 10, and Prince Louis, who just celebrated his seventh birthday last week.
