Prince Harry’s long-running security battle may finally be turning in his favour, and now one of Britain’s most respected royal experts has come forward with a bold verdict: the Duke of Sussex “deserves” protection when he’s in the UK.
The Home Office has launched a fresh review into Harry’s security status, examining evidence from police, government officials and Harry’s own team to determine whether he should once again receive taxpayer-funded police protection during visits home.
A decision is expected next month and could have major implications, including whether Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet might finally return to the UK for the first time since 2022.
Harry previously lost a high-profile legal battle over the issue earlier this year, blasting the outcome as an “establishment stitch-up.”
But now, with his status under reassessment, public debate is heating up, and one prominent royal expert is firmly in Harry’s corner.
Writing in The i Paper, former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond declared: “Security is offered to a former prime minister who served barely any longer than a lettuce takes to wilt, then surely the son of the King deserves the same?”
“Prince Harry is asking for the Metropolitan Police to protect him and (if he were to bring them) his family on occasional visits to the UK. It does not seem an unreasonable request. He cannot change the fact that he is the King’s son,” she added.
Bond argued that security is not just a practical matter, it sits at the heart of Harry’s estrangement from the Royal Family.
She wrote: “We now know that the issue of security lies at the very heart of Harry’s estrangement from his UK family… Harry was trying to sue his father’s government, which put Charles in an unenviable position. Easier to maintain radio silence.”
“If he (Harry) gets his wish and his security is restored when he is in the UK, it could pave the way to a family reunion,” she wrote.
“There’s no doubt that our elderly King would love to see his grandchildren. And, for all the bitterness of recent years, he still loves his youngest son, his ‘darling boy’.”
Bond insists Harry is sincere when he speaks about wanting Archie and Lilibet to understand their royal roots: “If he can at least feel he can bring his family here safely, there has to be some hope of reconciliation.”
