While Prince George is still years away from ascending the throne, royal experts are already speculating about who will be his biggest supporter when he becomes king. Many believe that his younger sister, Princess Charlotte, will play a crucial role in his reign.

According to Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, Charlotte and George have formed a particularly close bond growing up in the royal spotlight. Nicholl suggests that their dynamic is reminiscent of the strong relationship between King Charles III and his sister, Princess Anne.

Speaking on Channel 5’s Prince George: How to Make a Monarch, Nicholl explained, “Charles and Anne were incredibly close, and you do see a closeness between Charlotte and George. Rather than Charlotte being a threat to George, she will be possibly his greatest asset.”

Psychotherapist Lucy Beresford also weighed in, noting that Charlotte, 9, is unlikely to experience the same rivalry with George, 11, that she might have if they were the same gender.

“If your eldest sibling is the same gender as you, how are you going to compete? That sense of the firstborn getting all of the love while the younger one is left with nothing. If you’re a different gender, somehow you haven’t got quite the same tension that you have with same-sex siblings,” Beresford explained.

Will Charlotte and Louis struggle like Prince Harry as the 'spares'?

The concept of “the heir and the spare” has been widely discussed in royal history, particularly in relation to Prince Harry. However, royal expert Phil Dampier told Fabulous that Charlotte and their younger brother, Prince Louis, may have a different experience.

“He [George] is the future King, but the way things are going, Charlotte and Louis may have major roles in the future. Certainly, the royal family will need them as they are getting thin on the ground,” Dampier noted.

Unlike Prince Harry, who has openly spoken about feeling sidelined as the “spare,” experts believe Charlotte and Louis may benefit from a stronger sense of purpose within the modern monarchy. Their evolving roles could shape the future of the royal family in ways that differ from previous generations.
