A touching moment from the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022 is now being hailed as proof that King Charles is a “brilliant grandad” especially to grandson Prince Louis, who turns seven this week.
During the royal festivities, Prince Louis was feeling a bit restless and mischievous, prompting Prince William and Kate Middleton to try and settle him down. But, according to lipreader Juliet Sullivan, it turns out all the young royal wanted was his grandpa.
In a heart-melting exchange caught on camera, William was seen leaning across Queen Camilla to ask Charles: “Grandpa, can Louis sit on your knee?”
Charles, then still the Prince of Wales, didn’t hesitate. “Of course,” he replied, and moments later, Louis happily climbed onto his lap, grinning from ear to ear as Charles gently rocked him side to side.
The sweet interaction captured hearts worldwide and is being called a rare, candid glimpse into the King’s softer, more personal side.
Though Charles tends to keep his private life under wraps, insiders say he’s incredibly devoted to his five grandchildren Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet — as well as Queen Camilla’s five step-grandchildren.
In the 2018 documentary Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70, Prince William praised his father’s role as a grandfather, saying: “When he’s there, he’s brilliant. But we need him there as much as possible.”
He added: “He’s the fittest man I know, but equally, I want him to be fit until he’s 95… so having more time with him at home would be lovely, especially for the grandchildren.”
