Meghan Markle made her long-awaited return to Instagram this year, but fans and critics have noticed a key issue with her social media approach.
Since launching her new Instagram account, one major detail has stood out—she has disabled comments on all her posts.
This includes personal messages, like her Valentine’s Day tribute to Prince Harry, 40, as well as posts promoting her business ventures.
While Meghan hasn’t addressed the reason behind her decision, James Holton, a Consumer Behavior and Social Media Expert at GrowthScribe, believes it’s a "classic soft power move."
"Meghan turning off Instagram comments is a controlled flex and classic soft power move," Holton explained.
However, he warned that this approach may actually hurt her engagement in the long run.
"She managed to dodge trolls but lost the UK’s chatty social DNA, which explains why her Instagram is dry even a week after the show’s release. People need dialogue to trust, and this approach by Meghan kills social proof."
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, publicly launched her @meghan Instagram account on January 1, marking her first time back on the platform since marrying Prince Harry in 2018. She has since posted 16 times and currently has 2.5 million followers.
While her return to social media was highly anticipated, some critics argue that limiting interaction could make it harder for her brand to build an authentic connection with followers.
